Faculty of Shipping & Logistics (FSL)
The programmes within this faculty provide training for persons wishing to pursue careers in the shipping, logistics, tourism and allied industry. Students enrolled in these programmes receive training in a plethora of areas related to the movement of goods and people and the provision of services and information. From operational to management level, the rudiments and theories of the various subsets of the supply chain, transportation, shipping, port operations, cruise operations, tourism and hospitality, customs processes, immigration, inventory management and ICT are imparted. The faculty is subdivided into five departments and offers both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. The undergraduate programmes prepare candidates for middle-level employment in all sectors as they progress swiftly to supervisory and management positions. Department of Border Operations and Management (BOM) (formerly known as Customs Processes Freight Forwarding and Immigration)
- B.Sc. Border Operations and Management (BOM)
The increased movement of cargo and people across borders is an indication of a vibrant economy. However, this movement needs to be efficient and seamless to ensure that supply chains are not disrupted, resulting in negative economic consequences, as well as monitored and controlled to secure national borders from the entry and/or exit of illegal, controlled, or prohibited cargo and illegal aliens. The B.Sc. Border Operations and Management (formerly Customs Process, Freight Forwarding and Immigration), focuses on the theories, rules and practices related to border control and the cross-border movement of goods, people and information. These activities are integral to the international logistics and supply chain. Consequently, it is vital to have competent and trained personnel, manning the entry and exit points at seaports, and airports. Graduates of this programme will be equipped with the required knowledge, training, skills, and competencies to meet this manpower need and will find careers both locally, regionally, and internationally in diverse areas including customs administration, customs broking, freight forwarding, clerical aspects of shipping and immigration, supervisory positions in immigration, customs and quarantine and marine transportation.
Department of International Shipping (IS)
- B.Sc. Cruise Shipping and Marine Tourism (CSMT)
The cruise shipping industry is the fastest growing segment of the leisure market, growing at 7% per annum and the Caribbean is the premier cruise destination capturing over 34.5% of the cruise sector which supports 1.2 million jobs and contributes US$150 billion to the global economy annually. Today, cruise ships are described as floating hotels and as such require trained staff in diverse areas and apart from careers in navigation and engineering, trained and efficient staff are required for the hospitality component of the ship. Additionally, between January 2025 and December 2027, more than 25 ocean-going cruise ships are on order across the global cruise industry, driving the demand for well trained and competent staff. This degree is intended to provide the training to meet this manpower need. The B.Sc. Cruise Shipping and Marine Tourism affords students the best of both worlds as they are prepared for supervisory and management positions both on ship and on shore in the cruise industry. On the ship there are career opportunities in hotel management, guest relations, food and beverage management, entertainment and shore excursion management, financial and accounting services, cruise management and accommodations, while on shore there are opportunities in ship agency operations, marine tourism, tour operations, tour guiding, tourism marketing, sales and reservations, procurement and purchasing and port administration.
- B. Sc. International Shipping (IS)
International Shipping is a competitive and unique segment of the global logistics and supply chain. The most cost-effective and efficient method of transporting large volumes of cargo is by sea and hence approximately 85% of the world’s trade is done by sea. Without shipping, the import and export of cargo at the scale required for a buoyant global economy would not be possible. The international shipping industry therefore plays a critical role in global trade and by extension the global economy. The B.Sc. International Shipping prepares students for career opportunities which include ship broking, cargo broking, transportation management, chartering management, import entry analysis, freight forwarding and ship agency operations.

Logistics and supply chain management is an integral component of every organization, especially in the production and distribution trades. It is now accepted that effective logisticians can significantly impact the bottom line of organizations. Supply chain management encompasses all the activities required from raw materials extraction to consumer payment and collection of the product including the return of waste through reverse logistics. It focuses on planning and forecasting, purchasing, product assembly, storage, and delivery. Supply chain management makes it possible to build and deliver products better, faster, and cheaper. This fast-paced, global field offers supply chain career opportunities. Graduates of the programme will find challenging and rewarding managerial and supervisory careers in diverse areas of the port, shipping, logistics and allied industries including shipping agencies, marine terminal operations, stevedoring, freight forwarding, customs broking, product distribution, international trade, port administration, government services, transportation services and project management.

Shipping, logistics, supply chain management which entails the cross-border movement of goods and people, are all critical components of the globalized world. The Diploma in Shipping and Logistics is a professional programme designed enhance students’ ability to plan and analyse approaches to technical problems in the shipping and logistics industry. Through this programme students are equipped to evaluate shipping and logistics data that are to be utilized in planning and research. Additionally, the programme enables knowledge transfer from theoretical concepts to practical situations and the application of technical skills to a range of circumstances in the shipping industry.

Security plays a critical role in all industries. The mandate of this department is to provide high quality research, consultancy, and educational programmes in security. Consequently, the security programmes are designed to meet the local, regional and international security demands in the areas of land-based, sea, aviation and digital security in both the private and public security industry. The areas of focus include security management, cyber security & digital forensics, counter terrorism, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, non-proliferation of small arms and light weapons, non-proliferation of chemical, biological, radioactive nuclear materials and high-level consultancy services. Significant focus is also placed on maritime security in which students gain insight into threats, risks and vulnerabilities in the maritime space and are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to respond effectively. Career opportunities abound nationally and internationally in a wide range of public and private security companies, including arms of national security, airports and seaports, customs and financial institutions.
Department of General Studies
General education courses provide the foundation for all degree programmes. This department is delivers courses which include Mathematics, English, Accounting, Business Communication, Economics and Information Technology, along with research related courses, across all faculties.
