Employee Benefits


The following is a summary of the employee benefits offered by the Caribbean Maritime University, as outlined in the Human Resource Policy and Procedure Manual (CMU-HRA-OP-09). Each benefit is drawn directly from the policy document, with page references noted accordingly.

Health and Life Insurance Coverage

All confirmed and contracted employees with at least six months of continuous service are enrolled in group health and life insurance schemes. Each participant receives a health card and annual statements.

Staff Loans and Salary Advances

Loans may be granted for emergencies under specific conditions, and salary advances can be issued in cases of grave emergency, subject to approval.

Lunch and Supper Allowances

Employees receive lunch subsidies and supper allowances as part of their remuneration package. These are subject to review in line with government and union agreements.

Study Leave

Study leave is offered in line with Government of Jamaica Staff Orders, supporting employees’ educational advancement.

Membership in Professional Bodies

CMU supports membership in up to two professional organisations per staff member, where such affiliation benefits the university.

Performance-based Pay and Merit Increases

Financial rewards and merit-based increments are available for employees who perform exceptionally, as determined by appraisals.

Severance and Redundancy Benefits

Staff affected by redundancy or incapacity are entitled to compensation packages based on their years of continuous service.

Gratuity Payments

Employees on fixed-term contracts may be eligible for gratuity, based on length of service and GOJ guidelines.

Pension Scheme

Employees become eligible for pension upon retirement at age 65 or early retirement within 5 years of that age, under special circumstances.

Allowances During Leave

Staff may retain certain allowances during sick, vacation, or maternity leave, including acting, duty, and uniform allowances.
