School of Graduate Studies & Research (SGSR)

The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) aims to promulgate, support and practice high-level research and scholarship in the field of MET and allied industries. The SGSR seeks to engender a community that values research excellence through its focus on the following activities:

  1. investing in supporting faculty and students (primarily graduate students) in research and creative work.
  2. growing internal and external partnerships and collaborations for research and creative activities.
  3. engendering compliance and conformity to research ethic.
  4. seeking and creating opportunities to increase grant proposal submissions as well as awards and funding
  5. identifying opportunities to increase visibility and communication of CMU’s research enterprise

The SGSR is responsible for implementing and overseeing effective policies, processes, and practices that support academic achievement and retention of graduate students. The school promotes, supports, and advocates for graduate academics, professional development, and student support through its commitment to the quality and relevance of the graduate education offered at CMU. The mandate of the School is to support postgraduate programmes with respect to the quality of the teaching and learning process, monitoring student progress, assessment and acceptance of new graduate students, administration of scholarships, research grants, thesis examinations and the general welfare of postgraduate students. SGSR works in collaboration with the faculties for the administration of all programmes. The SGSR aims to promote quality research through interdisciplinary seminars that bring together students, supervisors, and other faculty. Guided by the Graduate School’s Policy, the School ensures high level of supervision of students’ research work. The supervision process seeks to help the students to disseminate their research findings through publications in peer review journals. The following faculties offer graduate programmes through the SGSR. These include:

  • Faculty of Shipping and Logistics
    • MSc. in Logistics and Supply Chain Management
    • Post Graduate Diploma in Shipping and Logistics

  • Department of Security Counter terrorism & Non-Proliferation
    • MSc. in Security Administration and Management
    • MSc. in Security Studies

General research focus

SGSR places emphasis on being ‘FAIR’ in its research undertakings. Emphasis is on:

  • Faculty and students
  • Academic research and scholarship in MET (and allied industries)
  • International collaboration (being the regional focal point)
  • Research ethic and Academic Rigor

This is promoted through:

  1. Delivery of core research courses to teach the various approaches to research.
  2. The Research Ethics Committee (REC) which constitutes research leads from faculty. The REC examines all proposals submitted to SGSR (to include those of faculty and external academic) and gives the go ahead for the conduct of research.
  3. The Graduate Selection Committee. This Committee provides for standardization with the graduate programme leads across faculties for the selection of the best candidates for matriculation to the CMU.
  4. Synergistic work with the CMU’s Industry Conference Committee and Research Implementation Committee to plan for and provide various platforms for the improvement and presentation of graduate research.
